I used to never do this. I don't know why. Not like paper-grading is some kind of mystical magic that can only happen behind closed doors.
Anyway, today I was giving an exam and forgot to bring something to read... so I just started grading the papers as they handed them in, while sitting at my desk in front of the students who were still busy with the exam. Students coming up to hand in their exams could see me grading the exams of the students who had come up just prior. And for the first time, it felt kind of normal.
Is this rude? A person hang-up?

Re: Grading papers in front of students
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 12:23 PMI have ADD I can't start correcting, because I'll loose knowledge of everything around me. Personally tests are lame and I don't have tight security anyway. But I don;t understand the end of your query...what's not normal? Why does it matter to feel normal? What kind of response were you looking for?

Re: Grading papers in front of students
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 4:15 AMOk, but I meant more the kind of situation where they're handing in exams and then leaving the class, and they come up to hand in theirs... and see you've already got the red pen out and are going down on their classmate's work.
Kind of a nasty way for a kid to walk out of an exam, no?
Oh, never mind. -

Tue, April 18, 2006 - 7:29 AMNo not really, you are the grader...and their work isn't indicative of the one you are correcting. Josh, just relax. -

Re: Grading papers in front of students
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 5:55 AMThis is my first post in this tribe - Hello everybody!
We just had our last day of the year with kids yesterday. I taught 4 classes of 6th grade physical science, and two of 8th grade Earth Science. We have a fairly high powered school, where high academic achievement is the norm. All year I had been giving tests where we would go over the material (pretty much the exact test shown on an overhead), I would post it on the internet, and they could study up on it all they wanted, then we would take it the next day. The tests were short, so I would grade it in two days and get them right back. Then, we would go over them, and they could make test corrections and get half credit per question back for each correction.
The kids became comfortable with this technique, and they seemed to like getting really high grades and really getting the material.
But, for the end of the year finals,,, I gave them a smoking hard - really long brain teaser test. They got to use all the notes we took for the year, there books, and cheat sheets they made the day before... But, they didn't get to preview the "look" of the test this time.
We only had two more days of school left after it,, so instead of taking 20 hours of my end of the year winding down time with grading super long tests with all the different forms of hand writing, utensil coloring, and paper assortments, I had them grade their own papers!
Another teacher said, "I heard you had them grade their own finals! Great idea! I'm sure that kept them busy."
True enough, but, THEY DID GREAT! It worked out fine!
Here's the class website if anyone's interested:

Re: Grading papers in front of students
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 7:01 PMNo, I don't think it's a nasty way for a kid to walk out of an exam. Research on motivation suggests that students need to know their work is actually going to be reviewed and looked at in a timely manner (and handed back). So, if they think anything at all of what you're doing, I would guess your students would think of tests (and their study efforts) as more meaningful if they see correcting them is a priority for you.
I tell ya, though... If only I could stay on top of things to the degree that I'd be able to correct tests as they are handed in. I'm always so behind... ugg!

Re: Grading papers in front of students
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 4:55 AMI do it that way quite a bit. This gives me a headstart on the weekend's grading, and I heard once that the kids like to see you busy when they are busy with work you've given them. I used to teach in a school where the classes were very unruly and would watch everyone like a hawk while they worked. That felt wierd! I felt had to, in order to keep the behaviors at bay. But sometimes I sensed their unease and could feel them asking inside, "Don't you have something to do?"
Occasionally you get a kid that wants to see what they got right when they turn it in. Sometimes, if they want, I'll grade it right in front of them so that they can see. Those can be nice teachable moments..
