Behavior!!!

I teach a reading class by Scholastic called Read 180. It's for striving or struggling readers. I teach grades 5-8. This is my fourth year teaching the program and I think it's a great program. I've had lots of great results. Trouble is, I have kids who'd rather be in PE or Art (so would I) and have a seriously bad attitude coming in. I also have lots of attention deficit issues. As kids get to know me, they relax a bit, but I still have those squirrelly individuals who just can't seem to get with the program!

I don't have a lot of support from the admin. They like to see discipline handled by the teams, but since I have kids on all teams, I don't get much support. I can't even have kids come in during lunch because I have lunch at a different time from most of my kids.

What are your favorite methods/systems for maintaining order and on task behavior?

I use "brownie points".... especially with my younger and squirrelier students ;-) I put tally marks by their names (on my clipboard thingy that I carry around) for things like positive class participation, gets to work right away w/o reminders, good attitude, helpful/considerate actions, and some that are more individually student specific. The first 5 points earned students a positive phone call home, I've let them make things for my bulletin board as a reward or have lunch in my room too, but mostly they just liked that their good behavior was being recognized. When I had a class where they ALL got up to a certain number of points, I actually brought in brownies. I'm big on accentuating/encouraging the positive actions.

Yes, I do want to try to reward rather than punish. I'm thinking I'll have an art day for kids who earn enough points.

For individual rewards I do a class "money" system. Each student gets their own checkbook,. and they recive class money for correct answers on HW and classwork . Every Friday we have an auction, where the kids can buy stuff. I usually get cheap snacks and toys from the dollar store. I start with an opening bid and go up in increments of $5. The kids love it (mine are 7th & 8th grade). As a group reward, they earn class points every time they are working together cooperatively, get tasks done on time, or just generally are considerate and appropriate. I like to make it a point to tell them why they are earning, so they understand what behavior got them the points in the first place. We set a goal for 25, and when they reach it we do something special together, like a free computer period or extra PE, or even a movie. You can even start an activity off with a goal by telling them if they can do such and such assignment in a specific amount of time, or quietly, you'll give them so many points. Hope that helps

Yeah, I have "cash" which they can get for asking a great question, or answering something really tough, or doing something special. They can get a few points, class supplies, or healthy snacks when they've saved up enough.

Never more than one out of the room.

Interruptions, tardies, & rudeness get a 5 min. detention at lunch
