The other day I was talking with my principal,, the one who's always talking to me about how I could improve my teaching by doing this or that thing with methods, set-up, etc. You know, the typical type A focus on organizational stuff.
But when he was talking to me and giving some advice the other day on how to help keep some really badly misbehaving guys in line in a class I have later in the day, he says, "You and I both know that teaching is really all about relationships..."
I took it as the biggest relief and the nicest thing he's ever said to me.. Probably because that's where I really put most of my focus.
Would you agree with him? How would it make you feel?

Re: What's teaching really all about??
Wed, October 11, 2006 - 7:48 PMI think teaching is mostly making sure kids are ready to go into the world with a passion and ability for expaning thier minds.
I think it is important to have good relationships to help them get to that point. But I would disagree that it is the most important thing.
I would however appreciate if my principal every said anything that complementary to me.

Re: What's teaching really all about??
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 8:16 PMI'd have to go with "fostering a love of learning/personal accomplishment" as well as "presenting students with sound concepts that will be the basis for continued life learning"
on that note.... a teacher has to have some pretty good people skills/rapport/relationships when it comes to getting the kids to that point ;-)

Indeed. Whether a teacher can relate to the students and their parents or not, she or he should try their best. As an african woman born and educated in the U.S. I believe contemporary cultural education in diverse cultures such as african and native american is very important. Otherwise young people will grow up ignorant and perpetuate negative cycles.

Re: What's teaching really all about??
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 3:15 PMI agree. But I'd add that it's also about having a real passion about your subject, one that you can convey on multiple levels (degree and intensity of study, voice, body language, work experience, etcetera). But yes, relationships are central. I can't reach everyone, even when I try, and I know that. Yet there will be a few kids for me and for every teacher, more for those truly great teachers, who we can see through to the completion of their adolescence by making sure they apply to the right schools and find environments that will build on whatever we've given them in one short year...being there for them when they have questions and need the advice of an adult they trust is an important part of helping them get what the educational system promises -- which is, hopefully, a better life through education!

Re: What's teaching really all about??
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 7:45 PMI think "teaching is all about relationships" is rather vague. It can be interpreted many different ways, depending on who you are--sort of a Chinese Fortune Cookie saying. I mean, concentration camp was all about relationships, for that matter . . . .
Now, with that said, let me skate out onto the thin ice as well:
Teaching is about training children in the art of critical thinking.
With the internet, there's no lack of information out there on any subject you'd care to name. A lot of it is garbage. Media are non-stop information geysers. How to navigate the stream? How to pick and choose? Advertisers spray information like runaway firehoses. What is truth, what is propaganda, what is spurious logic?
Jobs are changing, and the world is changing. Can we really train kids with all the skills they will need to survive in the year 2026? What will that even mean? But if they know how to evaluate the problem, locate the appropriate tools and resouces, and plow ahead to the solution or accommodation, they're in business, no matter what comes their way.
Just my opinion. I'll probably be replaced by the HAL 9000 in about 6 years, anyway, and IT can give them practice standardized tests until its circuit breakers blow out. -

Re: What's teaching really all about??
Fri, January 26, 2007 - 1:30 AMTo say "teaching is all about relationships" is a sweeping generalization for sure. And yet can't all of the other goals we have as teachers be included in the overall dynamics of relationships. Our connections with people are built on activities, shared experiences, thoughts, feelings. I guess what I'm saying is that there's no need to create a false dichotomy between emphasizing relationships and other goals. Both aspects are mutually reinforcing.
I think the principal's comment is deeper than it seems on the surface. To be sure, as teachers we strive to impart skills and values to our students. That's the "material," the "stuff" of the relationships. When where is a connection between a teacher and a student, a lot more can happen. Teachers can become models to substitute for or add on to parental relationships. A teacher can pass along the virtues and personal qualities (such as self-confidence) that she or he has developed through a subtle transmission that goes on under the surface--probably sub-consciously. I like to say "from heart to heart." I think this is a transpersonal connection, in the sense that it's more basic than personality. After a student has received a transmission from a teacher, that student may not feel a need to stay in contact with that individual. It's not personal--the connection happened, the transmission came through, and the work is done.
I think it's easy for me to forget how valuable the qualities we develop as teachers really are. The ability to speak clearly and calmly in front of groups, to help others focus their attention on what's at hand, to devise plans for group activities--these are truly precious skills that I tend to take for granted because I'm doing it every day.
