Ok, this is kind of random BUT was hoping to get some ideas on how other teachers organize their teaching materials (master papers, and etc.)? I am just curious what everyone else does because I am wanting to start this school year teaching Kindergarten (which is in only 2 ½ weeks away) by being more organized SO I thought I’d post this to see what others might do. Any organization tips?

Re: TRYING to start of the new school year by being organized...
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 11:38 PMOverall, I organize my school materials/papers by subject. I have a file cabinet with folders and also a closet organized by shelf. It also seems helpful to have a few folders be month-to-month (ie a folder for things I would only do in Sept or Oct since it is the beginning of the year). I teach fourth grade and have found this works great year to year. -

Sun, September 2, 2007 - 10:23 AMFile cabinets are essential! I also had this great system I got from some book somewhere with files for getting stuff OFF my desk! There's a file for stuff to take to the office, stuff to read later, stuff to file, stuff to copy, stuff to do today, etc. My desk still piles up, but it does help. I think you have to be organized in a way that makes sense to you and how you work, then keep it up, knowing there'll be some days where it seems like everything's a huge mess! Organization is always a work in progress.

Re: TRYING to start of the new school year by being organized...
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 9:36 AMI totally agree with the "work in progress" part of organization. I've got a master notebook for each of my preps and all the usual files/bins/etc. for student work. Last year I forced myself to get in the habit of clearing my desk everyday before I left - most days it only takes me 5 minutes to file stuff/put ref books away/throw out the sticky notes I'm done with and so on, but it has made a HUGE difference.

Re: TRYING to start of the new school year by being organized...
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 12:46 PMI use binders. I have one for school business with tabs dividing things like newsletters, staff meetings, professional development etc. I have one for committees, guided reading, parent letters etc. Then I have one I use as a plan book. I made my own plan book sheets where I could be more detailed than in a comercial one. To this notebook get added calendars & as each day has it's own sheet, I can paperclip notices like for field trips or picture day to the day they go with. I use large manila envelopes to keep track of returned student items such as picture day money, book orders and trip slips. These are then filed in a basket near my desk for easy retrieval. I keep a bookshelf behind my desk just for teacher reference and that puts the binders within quick reach. My blacklines also are organized in binders by topic. If you use sheet protectors they are kept neat and preserved for copies. For student work I have a to be corrected basket that gets emptied each night. Finished or still in process work is usually filed in each students' own basket in a folder color coordinated by subject. For assessments/big projects I have a work in progress basket that sits on the edge of my desk. Each project gets it's own folder. When assessments are completed they are filed in an accordian file under the child. Then during conferences, I can pull out a sampling of the students work with no issue. Good luck!
