Hi,
I am a teacher in Oakland. Although I'm at a great school, I plan to start looking at positions in private schools.
Perhaps someone could help me figure out some of the following:
-Are there specific criteria private school administrators seek (in an educator) that may not be obvious to a public school teacher?
-Are there any outstanding (online) resources with examples of resumes appropriate for the teaching profession (I’ve done the basic Google searches!)?
-Is it appropriate to include references to outstanding student achievement w/regard to local academic competitions or positive feedback from parents/administrators on a resume and/or cover letter?
-How do you word something about your ability to foster community, motivation, respect, responsibility, etc. in the classroom!? Is this the sort of stuff you leave off a resume and put in a cover letter…. ?
If you’d like to forward me a personal note or attach a copy of a resume you’ve found effective (your own or someone else’s), please do so!! I'd love to see a sample...
Thanks in advance folks!
Eileen

Re: Experienced teacher needs help with resume!
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 10:04 PMI interviewed with several bay area private schools last year and the two main things that came up were "what was my teaching philosophy" and "level of education & which universities issued your degrees". Different schools have different teaching models - they want to select a teacher who has a philosophy that jives with theirs. Once I was "in the door" and meeting more people on the campuses, I've got to say I was a bit surprised that the overwhelming majority of faculty members held graduate degrees from rather prestigious schools. Maybe it was just the schools I had further contact with - who knows.
I worked with an agency (free for me) that matched me up with schools that met my requirements (and I obviously met theirs). An awesome consultant (who tribes) has a great website with tips for interviews and updating resumes. I would strongly recommend a portfolio - that's were I had copies of student work, photos of my classroom, project based lessons I had created, and a copy of the district curriculum I helped design. In addition to the obvious letters of rec one needs from campus admin, etc I also included a letter from a first year teacher I had mentored as well as thank you notes I had received from students & parents that described something specific. I also included the abstract from my master's thesis. In other words, I put things in there which were unique to me and that I was especially proud of.
If you're interested in the agency or the consultant I mentioned, pm me and I'll see if I can dig up some links for you.
