Block Schedules...your thoughts??

topic posted Sun, April 1, 2007 - 5:45 PM by  Jody
Hi to you all :)

My school is planning on "piloting" a block schedule this coming week and then the staff are supposed to give their Pros/Cons about using it the following year.

I work in a middle school 6th-8th and i, myself am and SDC teacher (so, I've heard from my standpoint, I may have some flexibility not to go by this as I work with a co-teacher, but...)

Have any of your schools used this? And/or what did you find was a positive or negative about it?

This would mean we would teach to students in periods 1, 3, 5 for 2 hours on Mon Tues...then teach to students in periods 2, 4, 6 for 2 hours on Wed, Thurs. - I don't know what they are planning for Fridays b/c it is an early out day.

Personallly, I am concerned for students with this set up for multiple reasons, including foremost....consistent daily instruciton, review, reinforcement, and re-teaching of skills, etc.

LOVE to hear from you!!! ...they kind of sprung this one on us..apparently, some in leadership spoke accolades of this ie. b/c they teach science or other programs where the typical period is difficult to get through all activities...Please help!

I teach at the collegiate level so I cannot say within that environment; however, I can say that even college students have a hard time focusing for that long unless you make it it interactive. Even then they become cognitively tired, especially ina 3 hour session even with a break half-way through. I suspect younger children will experience the same. If so, that means they most likely will not be learning anything towards the end and you will be forced to repeat the material.

When I was in high school we switched to block. I found it helped students interested in a particular subject a chance to take more of that type of class. If they fell behind they could catch up. For example they could take math 1 and math 2 all in the same year. Instead of over 2 years. I also think it helps for classes like science that have labs or even art. But if it is a lecture class you will have students that loose focus part of the way through.

Thanks for the input Blum ;)

I agree in HS where you can have a class for a semester, etc. the block can be great, esp. for labs, art, or specific interest.

Just for those of you who may still respond, this is for students in Jr. High who have to take all courses each semester...and, no flexibility in adding/deleting subjects or type...therefore 2 hour block language arts, 2 hour block math (whatever level), 2 hour PE, etc. etc. 2x a week only plus a shortened schedule including all subjects on Friday.

Thanks in advance for your interest and help in this!! Great domain to get feedback!!

The more responses I get, the better when I present. All will be shared without bias, or for my particular program - FYI ....Thanks! ;)

    Ahhh... good ol' block scheduling.

When I was a HS student, we had an A/B block similar to what you're describing, Jody. Only we had A day and B day... A day = 1,3,5,7 periods; B day = 2,3,4,6 periods; 3rd period was 1 hour every day. We had this schedule for an entire year, and it worked well for me. I was definitely prepared for what my schedule would be like in college. I had ample time & opportunity to work on homework & projects b/c I had a day between all my classes (except 3rd period, which was again 60 minutes). I loved A/B block.

Now as a teacher, I teach on the 4x4 semester block. Four classes per semester. I am not too fond of it. I feel like we move entirely too fast for some students b/c the philosophy behind the 4x4 is something akin to "since it's the same amount of time as a year long course, we can smoosh everything into a semester". Sometimes, that just simply is NOT the better way. But eh, what can ya do? :) Anyway, it does provide a chance for students who fail a course to retake the same course immediately that following semester. Students end up with plenty of credits and shouldn't have any difficulty having enough credits to graduate. However, it is extremely difficult keeping a classroom full of teenagers focused and attentive for so long, every day, for months at a time! I feel sorry for the poor kids because I myself get bored!!!!! Now it does provide great opportunities for some in-class projects that wouldn't get done in a regular 45 minute, 7 or 8 period daily schedule. But it also cuts out some chances for real-world/relevant activities (time restriction just sucks all the way around!).

I guess I'm kind of on the fence about it all. I remember having a 7 period schedule in jr. high/middle school and I felt like I was constantly on the move! But for children in the middle school age range, that constant change & movement can be a *good* thing and help keep them focused!!!

How'd your presentation ever turn out? And what'd your school system decide to do?

I know this is an old post, but thought I'd chime in. I taught at a school that had the 8 period A/B block schedule with Math and English every day. The teachers complained that there wasn't enough time for electives, so the next year (I wasn't there then, thank goodness!) they went to a 10 period A/B block. Trouble was, the time for each class was cut almost in half, so if you were in a reading support class, like I teach, you'd only have an hour every other day and the electives they added were taught by content teachers, not electives teachers. Science and History also had their time cut in half. It was a disaster!

The school I'm at now has a 6 period non-block schedule, but because we team all 4 core subjects, core teams have all their kids in a row, so they can block and crunch at will. For example, one group of 7th graders would have their core classes during periods 2, 3, 4, and 5 with electives and/or PE 1st and 6th. The core teachers may decide to let science take 2 periods one day to do a lab, then balance that with their other group. It works well and gives teachers flexibility while giving kids their electives or PE every day.

I liked teaching a block schedule of 90 minutes, but it does HAVE to have interactive elements, or it's torture for teachers and kids!
